International Day of Mathematics
To celebrate the beauty of mathematics and to highlight its importance, UNESCO declared March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics in November 2019. Already recognized as Pi Day in many countries, the 14th of March is named after the significant number π, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is approximately 3.14. All over the world, fascinating events and exciting lectures take place or creative ideas are explored.
The motto for the 2022 International Day of Mathematics was "Mathematics Unites". There was a Global Online Celebration with talks in multiple languages.
The MAINS also joined in the celebration by inviting all interested parties to an online film screening of "Colors of Math". The film was followed by a Q&A session with the film’s director, Ekaterina Eremenko, Prof. Dr. Alicia Dickenstein (Vice-President of the IMU 2015-2018) and two portrayed mathematicians Prof. emer. Dr. Jean-Michel Bismut (Shaw Prize 2021) and Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler (President of Freie Universität Berlin). The post-screening discussion was held in English.

To most people math appears abstract, mysterious, complicated, inaccessible. But math is nothing but a different language to express the world. Math can be sensual. Math can be tasted, it smells, it creates sound and color. One can touch it – and be touched by it.
The film invites us to have a look at the beauty of math through the eyes of well-known contemporary mathematicians. It was screened at various film festivals to rave reviews.
