La La Lab – the Comeback
The Mathematics of Music
Currently only available to school classes.
The interactive exhibit ‘La La Lab’ was a huge success seven years ago. Now, familiar melodies are coming back to where it all began: the Mathematics Informatics Station (MAINS).
Some years may have passed, but the fascination for the interplay of formulas and waves has remained as strong as ever. Not only has the exhibit been given an update: The MAINS has moved to a brand-new location, complete with an updated concept that fuses exhibitions with spaces for a unique visitor experience.
Mathematics You Can Hear
An Interactive Learning Lab with Exhibits for Kids and Adults
In cooperation with top scientists from around the world, the open-source engineers at IMAGINARY have created a playground for the senses: The inner workings of music are uncovered, and mathematics is able to strike a chord with visitors. For ages 8 and up.
- From Sinus to Sound: Understand the waves that create music. Why do some intervals sound harmonious and some dissonant? Why do harmonies move us? Why is it that every piano is actually a little bit “out of tune”?
- Rhythm and Geometry: Experience how mathematical rules form complex beats. Experiment with visualizing music and let yourself be fooled by rhythms that seem to get faster forever.
- AI & Composition: Can an algorithm feel? Find out how artificial intelligence can create new sounds and help you – without any prior experience – conduct a piano concert!
- Fascinating Short Films and 3D-printed Objects: Music you can’t just hear but see!
Come by and discover just how much mathematics is in your playlist!
The exhibits were created by IMAGINARY in collaboration with renowned scientists from over 10 countries. The creation of the exhibits and the exhibition was made possible by the support of the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung. The exhibition is supported by the Technical University of Munich.
Please note: Part of our spaces are temporarily closed for construction. With ‘La La Lab,' the Discovery Lab for mathematics and computer science is entering its first exciting phase. We will keep you updated on further developments, highlights, and the upcoming opening to the public.
